Kælan Mikla

Kælan Mikla Live at Orange ’Ear | 14th August 2015

In August Kælan Mikla were on a small European tour. We are proud to present Kælan Mikla Live at Orange ’Ear.

Kælan Mikla are known for their dark melancholic sound, most of the songs consisting only of heavy bass, drums and screams with some softer, melodic synth parts in-between. The bands lyrics focus on inner confusion and their intimidating stage performance, often including performance art of some sort, is bound to leave the crowd in a melancholic trance.

Kælan Mikla is a three-piece gloomy poetry punk band from Reykjavík. These three art-punkers are the spirit of riot grrl incarnate in Iceland. They are doing something truly unique and subversive with their raucous and disarming yet captivating form of poetry goth rock. It’s not always as serious as it sounds but it’s always beautiful, bolstered by a strong DIY aesthetic and attitude. (RX)

Kælan Mikla (in English: Lady of the Cold) is a 3-piece poetic punk band from Reykjavík. The girl power trio consists of Sólveig Matthildur Kristjánsdóttir, Margrét Rósa Dóru-Harrysdóttir and Laufey Soffía. The ladies write their own poetry and are one of the best upcoming Icelandic bands in the past 2 years. The band was formed after winning first place in a Poetry Slam held by the City Library (Borgarbókasafn) in January 2013. They released one EP so far, more material in the making. Kælan Mikla has an avant-garde, dark but melancholic sound. Most of the gloomy songs feature a heavy bass, drums and screams with some extra synthesizer sounds. Kælan Mikla is influenced by ‘Rokk í Reykjavík’, a famous rockumentary by Friðrik Þór Friðriksson from 1982 about the postpunk/new wave scene in RVK in 1981-1982. They bring songs reflecting feelings of anger and melancholia. (ROK)

Here are some tunes on Bandcamp:

Kælan Mikla is the Icelandic name for a character from the Finnish cartoon Moomin. She is cold and winter anthropomorphized, having a mysterious and almost godlike presence. Every winter, she passes through Moominvalley, bringing icy cold temperatures with her. Her appearance is described as very beautiful, but if she looks someone in the eye, that person will instantly freeze to death. Kælan Mikla means “The great cold” but with a feminine suffix.(ROK)
