Plïnkï Plønkï – Hiraeth

Before our recording tour to the UK in August 2019 we got in touch with Plïnkï Plønkï. We did not get the opportunity to meet them in person, but they sent us the song „Hiraeth“ from their album „Pangur Din“ which was released at September 2019. We were totally thrilled from this great reduced and so evocative tune. Hiraeth is a Welsh word which cannot be completely translated. For Plïnkï Plønkï it’s a sense of saddness and longing/nostalgia for a time or place you can never go back to. We took this sentience with us on our journey and captured pictures for it on our way.

„Months, if not years ago we, became captivated by the word ‘Hiraeth’- a Welsh word with no direct English equivalent. Meaning ‘a homesickness or nostalgia for a place or time you can never go back to’, it felt at once filled with pathos, but also familiarity Language is a history we carry on the air, and words exist because they must- so it seemed odd to find this concept so tightly isled in the phonemes of the Welsh language. For something so relatable to be so outside the grasps of other tongues seemed so odd! So we sought to try and put it into the only Universal language we know- music 🎵 But if this word had no brothers or sisters in other languages, it made us wonder- what other words were we missing out on? What sentiments had been lost from language to language. This set us down a path of Celtic discovery-‘Pangur Din’ is the result of that journey…“
